This new record surpassed the previous July high of 39.7 degrees, set in Dellach im Drautal in 1983. The organization GeoSphere Austria verified this new monthly peak amid a heatwave concentrated in the eastern regions of the country. Austria’s all-time temperature record remains 40.5 degrees, recorded at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in August 2013.

The July milestone followed a June characterized by widespread and persistent extreme heat. According to GeoSphere Austria, 157 out of its 277 monitored weather stations recorded new maximum temperatures for June. Additionally, 66 stations documented their highest temperature ever recorded in any month. Vienna reached 40.0 degrees on June 28, and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg hit 40.1 degrees the following day. Several low-altitude areas experienced 10 to 14 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.
The Wegener Center at the University of Graz estimated that the combined socioeconomic damages from the June and late July heatwaves total approximately €1.4 billion. This initial estimate accounts for health impacts, decreased productivity, agricultural damages, infrastructure stress, and increased cooling needs. It also considers effects on ecosystems and public services. This figure does not constitute a final government assessment or a complete insured-loss tally; insurance data only reflect damages covered under active policies.
Heatwave intensity exceeds previous Austrian records
Using area-degree days as a measurement, the Wegener Center evaluated the extent of the heat events, which incorporate heat intensity, duration, and geographical coverage. They calculated roughly 16,700 area-degree days for the June heatwave, while estimates for the late July event range between 22,700 and 25,000. Austria’s prior benchmark was a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which accumulated about 22,100 area-degree days across land below 1,500 meters elevation.
The extreme temperatures also correlated with a notable rise in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety reported 395 such deaths in June 2026, marking the highest June total since the agency began tracking this data. Heat-related mortality indicates deaths occurring above expected levels during periods of abnormally high temperatures. It does not require heat to be listed as the sole cause on each death certificate.
Prolonged drought worsens Austria’s water scarcity
Following months of abnormally dry conditions, Austria faced the heatwave with a significant rainfall deficit. From January 1 to July 27, total nationwide precipitation was approximately 426 millimeters, well below the long-term average of 609 millimeters for that period, resulting in a near 30% shortfall. Authorities have described the first seven months of 2026 as the driest comparable period since at least the early 1900s. Regions such as Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland reported some of the largest rainfall deficits in the country.
Persistent high-pressure systems, intense sunshine, and scarce rainfall elevated evaporation rates during late spring and summer, reducing soil moisture and putting additional pressure on agriculture, waterways, forests, and water reserves. Climate records in Austria reveal that heatwaves have become more frequent, prolonged, and intense over recent decades, with average maximum temperatures during such events increasing by about three degrees from the 1980s to the 2020s.
