UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Reports Solar Capacity Reaching 22.8 GW Ahead of New Plug-In Regulations

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / RankWire.AI / – UK solar power capacity reached 22.8 gigawatts by the end of June 2026. According to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, there are approximately 2.076 million installations nationwide. During June, households, businesses, and developers added 27,391 systems, resulting in 132 megawatts of new capacity. Authorities may revise these provisional figures as more project data becomes available in the national database. The total encompasses domestic rooftops, commercial sites, and utility-scale solar farms.

UK solar market reaches 22.8 GW before new plug-in rules
New UK plug-in solar rules set an 800-watt limit for approved household systems.

June marked the second-highest month for installation activity in the UK data series, with March 2026 holding the record at 28,782 systems added. Over the year leading up to June, solar capacity increased by 2.2 gigawatts, representing a growth rate of 10.9%. Additionally, around 269,000 systems were installed in 2025—the highest annual total recorded to date. Smaller rooftop arrays dominated the installation count, while larger projects contributed significantly to the overall capacity increase.

The focus now shifts to the plug-in solar regulations set to take effect on August 27, 2026. Approved microgenerators will be permitted to connect via a standard UK plug and household socket under this framework. These qualifying products can deliver no more than 800 watts of alternating current output, must comply with Interim Product Specification version 2, and operate safely within the local distribution network. Devices such as plug-in batteries and systems that store electricity imported from household circuits are excluded from these rules.

    Safety regulations oversee plug-in connections

This legal update amends the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The statutory instrument was formally presented to UK Parliament on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. The amendment introduces a specific exception to existing restrictions on generating equipment plugs. Each plug must be verified by a notified body to meet the relevant BS 1363 standards. While product approval applies UK-wide, the electricity safety amendments are applicable in England, Wales, and Scotland.

The interim specifications specify requirements for electrical design, mounting methods, fire safety, labelling, and consumer instructions. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring under controlled conditions, observing stable operation and no prolonged unsafe energisation or thermal issues. The research also highlighted differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality, which informed the development of the UK-specific safety standards necessary for legal market entry.

Retailers prepare for approved product offerings

Following a government consultation that received 466 responses from businesses, specialists, regulators, and the public, more than 85% supported the interim specification, with many respondents also endorsing the plug regulation change. Input came from manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Concerns raised included older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear instructions. Some urged authorities to differentiate plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.

Major retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are preparing to offer products aligned with the new regulations. This connection format aims to serve households unable to install traditional rooftop systems, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces. Systems utilizing this new connection method are not legally operable before August 27. Starting from that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through a standard household socket. The capacity total for June does not include systems that will use the new plug-in framework.
