Austria’s Interior Ministry Reports a Decade-Low in July Refugee Applications

AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In July 2026, Austria received a total of 244 initial asylum requests, marking the lowest monthly count in a decade. This number represents roughly a 65% decrease compared to July 2025, which saw 697 applications, according to Austria’s Interior Ministry. When including both first-time and subsequent applications, the total asylum filings for July reached 840. These latest figures highlight a significant drop in asylum applications across Austria during the first seven months of the year.

Austria asylum applications fall to decade low in July
Austria reported 244 first-time asylum claims in July, the lowest monthly level in a decade.

Between January and July, Austria processed 5,743 asylum requests, a decline from 10,442 during the same period in 2025. This reflects approximately a 45% reduction from the previous year. The total includes various types of applications, while the figure of 244 in July pertains solely to new, first-time claims. The Austrian government releases monthly asylum statistics that distinguish between these categories to provide a clearer understanding of new claims versus repeat filings.

In July, the largest group of asylum seekers by nationality was Syrian nationals, who accounted for 267 asylum applications. According to the ministry, most of these Syrian applications involved children born in Austria rather than recently arrived individuals. Austria continues to enforce restrictions on family reunification in certain asylum cases. So far in 2026, authorities have recorded 60 related entries, compared to 853 during the same period in 2025.

Decreases in Returns and Border Detentions

During the first seven months of 2026, Austria saw more departures than new first-time asylum requests. By the end of July, 8,856 individuals had left the country through voluntary departures or forced removals, with 4,615 being removed and 4,241 leaving voluntarily. The authorities also executed 392 transfers under the European Union’s Dublin system, which assigns responsibility for specific asylum claims among member states.

Border apprehensions along Austria’s eastern border in Burgenland have also dropped significantly compared to previous years. From January to mid-August 2026, authorities recorded 339 apprehensions, a stark contrast to nearly 16,000 over the same period in 2023. The Austrian Interior Ministry attributes these figures to enhanced enforcement and cooperation measures with neighboring Hungary. Additionally, police have participated in Operation Fox, a joint effort aimed at migrant smuggling and irregular border crossings.

Refugee Application Numbers Continue to Decline in 2026

The July data continues the trend of declining asylum numbers recorded in the first half of 2026. During those six months, Austria received approximately 5,000 asylum applications, with departures surpassing new claims. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner has presented these figures as part of the government’s recent migration statistics. Voluntary return programs for Syrians also persisted, with 240 Syrian nationals leaving the country in July, according to official figures.

The latest data clearly show a year-on-year decrease in both initial applications and overall asylum filings. The 244 first-time claims in July marked the lowest in a decade, as highlighted in government reports, while the total monthly applications reached 840. The count for January through July stood at 5,743, remaining significantly below the 2025 levels. Austrian authorities categorize these figures as part of their ongoing reporting on asylum and migration, providing separate data for applications, departures, transfers, and border apprehensions.
