European Commission allocates €2.3 million to bolster Africa’s fight against cholera

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has committed €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian aid to combat cholera outbreaks across West and Central Africa. This support aims to assist Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. Officials emphasized that the funds will be used for treatment, disease surveillance, improving access to clean water, and sanitation initiatives. The announcement coincides with a surge in cholera cases across several African nations during 2026, notably a significant increase in Nigeria, with a focus on Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria will benefit from €1.5 million, representing the largest portion of the emergency aid package. The funds will enable expansion of intervention teams and supply cholera kits along with other vital resources. Additionally, they will facilitate improvements at public water sources and household water systems. Part of the assistance will be allocated to strengthen disease surveillance efforts in remote and hard-to-reach regions. The program also encompasses case management, risk communication, and community awareness activities, all aimed at curbing transmission within affected communities.

According to the latest World Health Organization data, there have been 90,049 reported cholera cases across 18 countries in its African Region up to June 28, including 1,528 fatalities. Nigeria alone reported 26,848 cases and 181 deaths during the same period. In June, Nigeria documented 19,887 new infections and 97 deaths. WHO attributes over 95% of Nigeria’s cases in 2026 to Borno State, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno identified among the most affected areas.

Funding aimed at treatment, water access, and surveillance efforts

The Central African Republic will receive €500,000 to support case management, vaccination campaigns, and water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. The funds will also enhance disease surveillance, case detection, and community engagement activities. Additionally, they will help ensure safe and respectful burials where necessary during the outbreak response. WHO recorded 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country through June 28. The European Commission noted that this assistance is part of its emergency humanitarian response to the outbreaks affecting the four nations.

Cameroon will benefit from €100,000, which will reinforce efforts to contain the outbreak and improve patient care within affected communities. The support will fund additional humanitarian personnel, essential medicines, cholera treatment units, and oral rehydration points. WHO reported 108 cases and six deaths in Cameroon through June 28. Chad is allocated €200,000 to support water, sanitation, and hygiene measures. The funding will also bolster community surveillance and case management. During the same period, Chad documented 109 cases and three deaths.

Nigeria’s surge drives regional increase in cholera cases

WHO indicated that in June, the African Region reported 27,954 new cholera cases across 12 countries, reflecting a 95% rise from May. The region also saw 284 deaths related to cholera during that month. Nigeria recorded the highest number of new infections, followed by the Congo and South Sudan. The increase in Nigeria is largely attributed to the spike in cases in Borno State, where ongoing conflict, population displacement, poor sanitation, and increased rainfall have elevated the risk of cholera transmission.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Severe cases can lead to rapid dehydration and require immediate medical treatment. The EU funding is directed towards interrupting transmission pathways and improving access to healthcare in affected areas. The total aid package across the four countries amounts to €2.3 million, focusing on treatment capacity, surveillance, vaccination where appropriate, provision of safer water supplies, sanitation improvements, and direct community engagement during the ongoing outbreak response.
