Frontex Reports 37% Decrease in Irregular EU Border Crossings Through July 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – According to initial data from the European Union, irregular crossings at the bloc’s external borders declined by 37% during the first seven months of 2026. Frontex documented roughly 61,000 detections at the EU’s outer borders from January 1 to July 31, comparing these figures with the same period in 2025. The majority of key migration routes experienced fewer crossings during this timeframe. These figures offer the latest insight into irregular entry patterns across the EU’s external boundary.

The Eastern Mediterranean remained the most active route, with 20,232 detections, reflecting a 28% decrease from 28,068 during the same months last year. The Central Mediterranean followed with 16,454 detections, showing a 55% reduction from 36,656. Together, these two routes accounted for approximately 60% of all detections registered in the EU entry tally. Libya continued to be the primary departure country on the Central Mediterranean route over the seven-month span.

In contrast, crossings along the Western Mediterranean increased, reaching 11,217 detections, which is a 37% rise from 8,175 recorded in the previous year. Sea crossings on this route totaled 8,648, compared to 7,096 in 2025. Land detections through June numbered 2,569, up from 1,079. Conversely, the Western African route declined by 60%, with detections falling to 4,682. Crossings in the Western Balkan region decreased by 26% to 4,910, while detections at the Eastern Land Border dropped by 44% to 3,209.

European Border Detection Trends Mainly Driven by Mediterranean Routes

Separate data concerning crossings through the United Kingdom revealed another significant decline. Frontex reported 22,469 attempts or successful crossings leaving the EU, representing a 46% decrease from 41,647. These Channel crossing figures are not included in the EU entry total. The agency also recorded 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, which is a 9% increase. The seven-month data exclude extraordinary border incidents in Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based its analysis on preliminary EUROSUR data and estimates available as of Aug. 4. The agency noted that revisions might occur as authorities update and refine the information. These statistics reflect detection counts, not individual persons, meaning a single individual could be counted multiple times if crossing at different locations or on separate occasions. This distinction is crucial when comparing route-specific totals to the overall number of migrants involved.

Seven-Month Data Continues the Declining Trend from the First Half of 2026

The current figures reinforce the decline observed by Frontex after the first six months of 2026, when over 49,000 irregular border crossings were recorded, also marking a 37% reduction from the previous year. At that time, detections along the Western Mediterranean route had increased by 17% compared to 2025. However, the seven-month comparison now shows a 37% rise in that route. The Western African corridor experienced a 67% decline through June and a 60% reduction through July.

The agency reports approximately 3,800 officers supporting the EU’s external borders, assisting national authorities with border management and life-saving operations at sea. These Frontex personnel also aid member states in implementing rules under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latest data highlight persistent variability in route trends, with most major corridors experiencing broad declines, except for an uptick along the Western Mediterranean route.
