Spain’s Meteorological Agency Issues Warning of 45-Degree Temperature Spike Amidst Rising Wildfire Threats

Brussels, Belgium / RankWire.AI / – Across Western Europe, escalating environmental and public health issues emerged on Thursday as vast plumes of wildfire smoke crossed national borders. The Emirates News Agency confirmed that a fourth heatwave poses a serious risk to France and Spain, with intensifying wildfire smoke complicating emergency operations and challenging local health authorities. Weather agencies in both countries have issued alerts that the extreme heat will exacerbate existing fire conditions and lead to large-scale evacuations, which have already displaced more than 300,000 residents and tourists across the Iberian Peninsula and southwestern France.

Spain weather agency warns of temperatures reaching 45 degrees
European emergency responders maintain maximum readiness during extreme heat conditions.

In Spain, forecasts from AEMET suggest daytime temperatures could hit 45 degrees Celsius in several regions, potentially making 2026 the hottest year recorded in Spanish history. Meanwhile, the national weather service Météo-France reported that southwestern France is experiencing extreme temperatures around 38 to 42 degrees Celsius, which is increasing the dryness in the atmosphere and fueling ongoing forest fires. Officials in both nations emphasized that the combination of long-term drought, high ambient temperatures, and strong winds creates an environment highly conducive to rapid fire spread.

Government officials across Southern Europe have issued urgent operational directives to strengthen containment lines before temperatures peak. Spain’s Minister for the Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, warned that the expected rise in temperatures will elevate the risk of new forest fires to unprecedented levels in rural and wooded areas. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska described the current window of opportunity as critical for controlling major wildfires. On the French side, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez directed regional emergency services to escalate alert levels to their maximum capacity, warning that local communities are entering a critical phase of extreme heat.

Wildfire Smoke Extends Across Borders, Polluting Air and Endangering Health

In addition to land destruction and civilian displacement, regional air quality data shows that dense smoke from wildfires, containing fine particulate matter, has traveled hundreds of kilometers. The European Respiratory Society issued warnings that this smoke carries toxic chemicals, fine dust, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. Medical experts confirmed that these particulates penetrate deep into human lungs and enter the bloodstream, leading to risks such as carbon monoxide poisoning, severe respiratory and cardiovascular issues, increased hospital admissions, and higher premature mortality rates among individuals with chronic health conditions.

Organizations focused on environmental policy have highlighted that these atmospheric smoke plumes pose a cross-border public health hazard beyond the immediate vicinity. The Health and Environment Alliance reports that wildfire-related air pollution cannot be effectively contained, as toxic gases and particulates linger in the upper atmosphere for extended periods while drifting across European urban centers. Health officials advise residents in affected areas to stay indoors with windows closed, avoid outdoor physical activities, and wear specialized particulate-filtering masks if outdoor exposure during intense smoke events cannot be avoided.

Responders Confront Complex Challenges at Wildland-Urban Interfaces

Addressing the broader environmental outlook, representatives from the European Commission noted that the continent’s wildfire season has significantly lengthened in recent years. The Commission confirmed that the 2026 fire season began unusually early in April and is expected to continue until October or early November. Climate assessment agencies across Europe now rank wildfire smoke as the second-largest public health threat on the continent, following only extreme heatwaves, considering the total population impact across EU member states.

While firefighting teams work to contain flames, local authorities continue organizing emergency shelters, medical triage points, and air quality monitoring stations. Updates confirm that a fourth heatwave is endangering France and Spain, with escalating wildfire smoke risks requiring coordinated regional efforts and ongoing intergovernmental collaboration. Firefighting units remain deployed along critical wildland-urban interfaces, while health ministries across Europe monitor hospital capacity to handle the compounded respiratory effects caused by extreme heat and toxic smoke in affected communities.
