South Australian Authorities Report First Fatality of Endangered Australian Sea Lion Due to Bird Flu on Kangaroo Island

ADELAIDE / RankWire.AI / – Environmental officials in South Australia have verified the initial death of an endangered Australian sea lion caused by H5N1 avian influenza. The carcass was found by a park ranger at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island, which hosts the third-largest single colony of the species, representing about five percent of its overall numbers. As the risk of bird flu to the Australian sea lion becomes evident on Kangaroo Island, wildlife authorities are ramping up surveillance efforts across vital pinniped breeding zones.

Official briefings from the South Australia Department for Environment and Water confirmed that laboratory tests showed a strong positive for H5 avian influenza. Environment Minister Emily Bourke explained that, although the sea lion had been recovering from a shark wound inflicted three months earlier, post-mortem diagnostics revealed that the viral infection was the primary cause of death. Bourke pointed out that the animal’s weakened immune system during recovery likely made it more susceptible to the virus.

This incident heightens conservation worries for the species, which is endemic to Australia with an estimated global population between 10,000 and 12,000. About 80 percent of these remaining individuals are located in South Australia, where coastal colonies were already experiencing an annual baseline decline of roughly two percent before the virus’s emergence.

Kangaroo Island’s Shoreline Sees First Australian Sea Lion Death from Bird Flu

Following the confirmed case, wildlife managers in the state have initiated precautionary measures at Seal Bay. Teams have administered hookworm treatments to over 400 sea lion pups to enhance their immune defenses, and efforts are underway to trap and remove feral cats to prevent transmission around the colony. As the situation develops, authorities are collaborating with the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to assess the possibility of participating in international trials for experimental mammalian vaccines, following reports that bird flu has caused the first sea lion death on Kangaroo Island.

This case signals an expansion of the H5N1 strain’s presence among Australian marine mammals, after a long-nosed fur seal in Beachport on the Limestone Coast was confirmed infected. Researchers from Charles Darwin University had previously issued warnings about potential mass mortality events in local seal populations, drawing comparisons to large-scale die-offs observed in pinniped colonies in South America and sub-Antarctic regions.

Biosecurity Efforts Spread Across South Australia’s Coastal Reserves

So far, over 290 cases of H5 avian influenza have been confirmed among wild bird and mammal populations in South Australia, accounting for more than half of all cases reported nationwide. While no additional sea lion deaths have been documented at Seal Bay, rangers continue to monitor the situation closely.

Both state and federal wildlife agencies maintain daily surveillance at island sanctuaries and on mainland haul-out sites. Information regarding biosecurity protocols, mortality statistics, and disease control strategies remains accessible through official government environmental portals as efforts to safeguard vulnerable marine species proceed.
