German Federal Police Enhances Nationwide Counter-Drone Capabilities and Security Infrastructure

FULDATAL, GERMANY / RankWire.AI / – Germany is boosting its drone protection systems as authorities respond to rapid advancements in unmanned aircraft technology. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that counter-drone efforts will remain an ongoing challenge for the Federal Police. He made these remarks during a visit to the police aviation unit in Fuldatal, Hesse, on Thursday. Dobrindt highlighted an ongoing technological race between defense systems and those attempting to circumvent them.

Germany expands counter-drone force and security network
Germany expands counter-drone security across airports, policing and technology research.

In December 2025, the Federal Police established a specialized counter-drone unit to handle operations nationwide. The current personnel count is approximately 70, based on latest government data. Plans are underway to expand this number to 300 officers by the end of 2026. Additionally, the Interior Ministry has authorized an increase from four to eight locations, aiming to enhance coverage and response efficiency throughout Germany.

Germany has also prioritized the deployment of counter-drone systems at key airports managed by Federal Police. These include Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, and Leipzig/Halle. The government has been acquiring portable detection and defense solutions for aviation security purposes. Details of these systems remain undisclosed publicly due to security reasons. Airport grounds fall under police jurisdiction for drone defense, while state police oversee areas outside airports.

Federal police unit undergoes nationwide expansion

This growth follows an incident on August 4 at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany. Federal prosecutors reported that a drone carrying professional explosives and a detonator entered the airport premises. Evidence indicated an intent to cause an explosion with the aircraft. A cargo plane also collided with an object, believed to be another drone, in the broader airport vicinity. The federal prosecutor took charge of the investigation on August 6.

The Federal Criminal Police Office is leading the investigation under the supervision of the federal prosecutor. Authorities have not publicly assigned responsibility for the incident. The government has refrained from identifying suspects while investigations continue. This event has renewed focus on protecting airports and critical infrastructure. Officials have also stressed the importance of enhanced cooperation among federal agencies, state authorities, and security organizations managing drone-related threats.

Research facility launched to combat drone risks

On August 18, Germany inaugurated a Technology Center for Drone Security at the German Aerospace Center’s Cochstedt site. This center also utilizes research capabilities from the organization’s Braunschweig location. Its mission is to test drone detection and defense technologies under realistic conditions. The German Aerospace Center plans to invest over 10 million euros and create up to 40 new jobs. The facility aims to foster collaboration among researchers, security agencies, and industry players working on counter-drone solutions.

This new center operates alongside Germany’s Joint Counter-Drone Centre, which facilitates information sharing and assessment coordination among federal and state authorities. The federal police have also expanded their authority regarding drone detection and interception. Dobrindt remarked that the rapid pace of technological change necessitates ongoing development and testing of new systems. The government’s current approach combines operational police units, coordinated security analysis, and dedicated research efforts to bolster protection against unauthorized and potentially dangerous drones.
