Lower Austrian Emergency Authorities Respond to Significant Wildfire Near St. Egyden

ST. EGYDEN AM STEINFELD, Austria / RankWire.AI / – Authorities responsible for emergency management in Lower Austria issued mandatory evacuation directives on Friday following the rapid spread of a forest fire in the Föhrenwald pine woodland close to St. Egyden am Steinfeld. Local officials verified that a substantial wildfire has impacted St. Egyden, as aggressive flames encroached within 50 meters of residential areas, prompting the activation of the highest emergency alert, Level B4. Civil defense units prioritized the swift evacuation of residents along Bahnstraße and within the Waldstrandsiedlung housing complex.

Coordination between municipal authorities and regional disaster response teams facilitated the safe evacuation of at least 250 residents from zones at immediate risk. Mayor Christa Tisch of St. Egyden confirmed that emergency personnel evacuated six homes on Bahnstraße and 50 apartments across five residential buildings in the Waldstrandsiedlung district. Those displaced were taken to a temporary shelter set up at the Saubersdorf volunteer fire station, where humanitarian groups provided crisis support and essential supplies.

Over 700 firefighters from 84 regional fire departments across the districts of Neunkirchen and Wiener Neustadt responded quickly to the incident. Firefighting efforts involved ground crews working alongside aerial units, which included five police helicopters, two private commercial aircraft, and a Black Hawk military helicopter supplied by the Austrian Armed Forces. The Austrian Red Cross deployed 44 emergency personnel and 21 specialized vehicles to facilitate evacuation and assist affected families.

Level B4 Activation by Lower Austria Emergency Teams in Response to Wildfire

This incident marks the second significant blaze within the Föhrenwald area in less than two weeks, following a previous forest fire that burned 100 hectares and required a five-day suppression effort. Local disaster management officials confirmed that the new fire ignited on the opposite side of the forest, with strong winds carrying dense smoke plumes across regional transit routes. Public safety authorities issued warnings advising drivers to avoid primary roads near Neunkirchen to keep routes clear for emergency vehicles.

Klaus Stebal, spokesperson for the Lower Austrian State Fire Department Association, confirmed that emergency personnel established a containment perimeter around the main fire to prevent further spread. Crews also tackled several smaller fires that broke out spontaneously in nearby towns such as Strelzhof and Netting. Officials emphasized that strict shift rotations were enforced to ensure ground crews did not work more than 12 hours straight during intense suppression activities.

Medical Teams Report No Injuries During Initial Response Efforts

Preliminary investigations by law enforcement agencies at the state level have been launched to determine the specific cause of the wildfire ignition in the afternoon. Authorities pointed out that the previous fire in the same pine forest was caused by legacy World War II phosphorus ammunition buried underground. While a direct connection between the two incidents has not been established, environmental conditions across Lower Austria remain exceptionally dry, increasing regional wildfire risk.

Emergency services kept continuous monitoring stations active around the Föhrenwald perimeter through Friday evening to secure nearby residential zones. As the wildfire affects St. Egyden, civil defense officials confirmed that no injuries have been reported among residents or first responders during the initial evacuation phase. Technical engineers and forestry specialists are expected to continue perimeter stabilization and suppression of hot spots in the days ahead.
